green-globe-hands-300x299Hi All,

Well, it was a heck of a unit, and there will definitely be changes if I decide to do a project like this again- but in the end- I’m happy with the results. So, happy Earth Week to you! PLEASE go check out my classes’ site:  http://engl100.wordpress.com/ I’ll post more on how it all came together as well as a short list of “best of” to check out on the site. This week there’s a flurry of activities and events on campus for Earth Week and I’m looking forward to attending as many as I can.

Then, I should really post our stumble list from our Easter/Cooper’s birthday celebration weekend. I suppose it should be changed to the *fell flat on our faces* list after that weekend….

I found these websites and thought you might be interested (disregard if you have seen them already).

Although I have really just been using it for my personal bookmarking I do have a delicious account which I put many of these things on. I suppose I should start using it the way it was meant to be…as a “social” bookmarking site. So, feel free to peruse my links.

This concepts partners municipalities with businesses to give an extra incentive to recycling.

Kevin- this site is interesting. At first glance i was a little uneasy about it but couldn’t articulate what seemed questionable, but generally was happy to see an incentive program being offered. I found myself thinking a lot about it during one of the presentations yesterday. One of our poli-sci professors discussed a program for waste management implemented in brazil which gives incentives for individuals to bring in their recyclables. The Program translates into “trash which is not Trash” and when people bring their recyclable waste (plastic, alumininum, food, paper) to the local stations they recieve a basket of fresh produce. Then someone asked what sort of incentive ot would take for Americans to recycle in the same way, and I thought of this program (unfortunately I couldn’t remember enough details of the name of the site to bring it up in the conversation). What troubles me a bit thoough is the corporate sponsorship of the program proposed in the site above. In the Brazil system the government pays local farmers for their produce, which has created an increased demand and support for this type of small, local farming. Also, it helps promote and allow for people to have access to healthier eating habits – rather than promoting more consumer spending to produce more waste. I think there needs to be an tangible incentive for Americans to recycle, but I’m afraid programs like this just perpetuate the unsustainable system that’s in place.
